If you have a badly damaged tooth, you may need to a root canal to repair it. A root canal is where your dentist cleans the canals in your tooth’s root. Dentists prefer saving a tooth rather than extracting it, if possible. This is done by taking out the damaged area of the tooth pulp, cleaning the area, disinfecting it, and finally, filling it and sealing it to prevent bacteria from entering.
So, what could cause a tooth to require a root canal treatment? Sustaining an injury to the tooth, having a deep cavity, incurring a crack in the tooth, and having repeated dental procedures.
Taking a dental X-ray will help our dentist determine whether a tooth requires a root canal. Next, you will be given a local anesthetic to numb the area. Then, an opening will be made to expose the infected tooth pulp and remove it. The roots will then be filled with gutta-percha, a rubberlike material, and then sealed with a cement covering.
Post-treatment, you will want to take good care of the tooth by practicing good oral hygiene. Brushing twice a day for two minutes, and flossing at least once will protect the tooth and help keep your remaining teeth in tip-top shape. You will want to avoid chewing on hard foods to keep from harming teeth. In addition, maintain routine dental cleanings to keep your smile healthy.
